What Can Be Done
A path to improvement
You and your physician may have begun a discussion about your mood and anxiety symptoms and their treatment. You should be aware that, for milder depression and for some anxiety conditions, certain types of talk psychotherapy may provide an alternative to medication. Furthermore, research has shown that combining medication with psychotherapy is often better than either treatment alone.
Studies also indicate that exercise is helpful in promoting recovery from mood and anxiety disorders and in maintaining good emotional health. It may seem like the last thing in the world you would have an interest in or the necessary motivation for, but pushing yourself to engage in some form of exercise will benefit you. (Before beginning an exercise regime, however, you should check with your doctor about any restrictions you may have.)
Although alcohol is a part of many people’s lives it could interfere with your functioning and with the recommended treatment. Please discuss with your doctor what role drinking or any other substance that you use may be playing in your condition and what to do about it.
